Foo Bao

Authentic Asian street food that’s quick and fresh, right on the beachfront

WHERE IS IT? On the promenade in Cape May near Convention Hall, steps from the beach.

WHY SHOULD I GO? Inspired by the vibrant cuisine of Taiwanese street food, Chef Lulzim Rexhepi and wife Amy Kao introduced Foo Bao (Lucky Bun) in 2023, bringing Asian street food to Cape May in a new light.

Foo Bao offers authentic Taiwanese steamed buns — fluffy and slightly sweet — with an array of fillings that highlight the sweet, sour and spicy flavors of southeast Asian fare. Choose from various selections like barbecue pulled pork, pineapple-chili aioli shrimp, and sweet and sour duck. Other flavors range from the classic braised pork belly to lighter options like ginger-black bean salmon and vegeterian treats like yellow curry tofu and vegetables. All are generously garnished with pickled Asian radish and carrots, cilantro, scallions, crispy shallots and garlic.

Try their bao buns in orders of three or mix and match single buns; the menu concept is designed so you can sample a variety, similar to when enjoying street food in Asia.

Go gluten-free with a rice bowl and choose from the same protein options over white or brown rice. Traditional salads and house made beverages like basil-limeade complement the experience. Save room for desserts, with treats like coconut rice with fresh mango, and banana spring rolls.

Foo Bao provides counter service, takeout and ample seating, where Chinese motifs and modern vibes intersect in a cool and casual setting.

INSIDER TIP Snag a table on the outdoor patio and be center stage for the best people watching on the promenade.
