Magnolia Room
Celebrating 150 years of seaside beauty, relaxation, legendary cuisine and classic cocktails
WHERE IS IT? In the magnificent Chalfonte Hotel on Howard Street, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year!
WHY SHOULD I GO? The Chalfonte was built in 1876 by Civil War hero Henry Sawyer and is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Cape May. The Chalfonte occupies nearly an entire city block with her distinctive ship-like profile, crowned by an Italianate cupola.
While it has been renovated to provide modern comforts such as AC and private baths, great care has been taken to preserve the integrity and charm of the original structure. You’ll find original antiques and fixtures throughout, but the place to be is the large veranda lined with rocking chairs, shaded by the iconic green striped awnings.
The veranda is one of the most charming places in town to eat dinner, especially with the dishes coming out of the hotel restaurant, The Magnolia Room. The legendary fried chicken is one of the reasons to go, but it’s certainly not the only one. You’ll find a menu offering a host of American classics, from grilled flat iron steak to pork shank, and seared scallops.
Before or after your meal, check out the intimate King Edward Bar, located off the lobby. It’s open at 3pm every day during the season and hosts regular live entertainment, including family-friendly porch concerts and the already-legendary Howard Street Ramble on Thursdays, when talented local musicians gather to jam for your enjoyment!
The Chalfonte is also a popular choice for weddings and private events. Ceremonies can be held in the Tin House Garden, guests can mingle on the porches over hors d’oeuvres, and 70 guest rooms as well as two adjacent cottages provide plenty of accommodations for out-of-town guests.
INSIDER TIP Breakfast at The Chalfonte is one of the island’s best-kept secrets. It’s an inspiring spot to start your day, plus the menu items will appeal to everyone in the family — AND they’re reasonably priced, too.
