Whale’s Tale

Making memories on the Washington Street Mall for over 50 years, this Cape May landmark is a local treasure!

WHERE IS IT? “The block with the clock” at the start of the mall, near Congress Hall.

WHY SHOULD I GO? Whale’s Tale is a Cape May institution — 2026 marks 52 years since Chuck and Hilary Pritchard opened its doors. They have watched Cape May change and evolve over the years and have continually adapted the store to surprise and delight customers both young and old. The store has become not just a place to shop, but a destination where memories are made by generations of families year after year when they visit our town.

The store continues to be family owned and operated by two generations of Pritchards. The product mix aims to have something for everyone — from postcards to high-end jewelry, sentimental cards to joke books, souvenirs to handmade art. The store is packed, the selection is vast and there’s always something new to see.

Fifty years is a huge milestone in retail. With a track record of supporting local makers, sustainable products, and community initiatives, the Pritchards have fostered a loyal customer base which has led to the longevity of their business. Whether you’re looking for wedding, hostess or birthday gifts, the perfect card to bring a smile, or a jewel to remind you of the shore, Whale’s Tale is your one-stop shop for charming and whimsical gifts.

INSIDER TIP The children’s section is amazing! You’ll find educational toys, puppets, puzzles and books. Many of the books are by local authors and are signed editions, including The Legend of the Cape May Diamond, Cape May A to Z and In the Land of Exit Zero.
